Create a low-carbon future

The 12th International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Summit Forum was grandly opened in Macau! The forum was co-organized by the China International Contractors Association and the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute. It focused on hot and cutting-edge topics in the field of international infrastructure investment and construction, and aimed to provide an international professional platform for the industry to exchange ideas, obtain information, discover opportunities, and seek cooperation.
With the theme of “Creating a low-carbon future and helping customers build a better world”, Caterpillar demonstrated at this forum a series of content that fits the theme, including its firm commitment to sustainable development, more efficient and energy-saving products, services and solutions, and stronger support for community and economic development.

With the acceleration of global infrastructure construction, the impact of traditional infrastructure on environmental climate change has become increasingly obvious. Further reducing carbon emissions throughout the life cycle of traditional infrastructure projects and vigorously promoting the construction of new infrastructure are of great practical significance for the international community to respond to climate change and achieve the “dual carbon” standards worldwide.

During the summit forum, Caterpillar’s global vice president Chen Qihua was invited to attend and speak at the theme forum on “Trends, Opportunities and Challenges in the Development of International Infrastructure under the Context of ‘Dual Carbon'”. He shared Caterpillar’s understanding and related practices of sustainable innovation from three aspects: product technology innovation, construction solutions and lean digital operational excellence. The following is the transcript of his speech.

Although the world is still facing various challenges in fighting the epidemic, thanks to the organization of the China International Contractors Association and the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute, we are able to gather again in Macao to discuss the new development and sustainable development of international infrastructure cooperation. I am honored to participate in this theme forum on behalf of Caterpillar, and communicate and share with several guests and more friends in the audience on the recent hot topic of “dual carbon”. Sustainable development is a common goal of the infrastructure construction industry. With more and more attention and attention to a low-carbon future, supporting infrastructure construction projects with lower carbon emissions, higher fuel efficiency and more flexible energy use has become a top priority in the infrastructure construction industry. Today, I will share with you some of Caterpillar’s understanding and related practices of sustainable innovation from three aspects: product technology innovation, construction solutions and lean digital operation excellence, and look forward to discussing with you how Caterpillar can better support customers in energy transformation and work with business partners to build a better world together.

Product technology innovation

It is essential to use products that are constantly upgraded, as newer generations are often more sustainable. Overseas engineering projects take a long time, and using continuously updated products is a way to make projects more efficient and economical, with a sustainable impact.

As we move toward a low-carbon future, innovation in products and energy solutions is equally critical. One of Caterpillar’s strategic focuses is to continuously enrich our product line, and we support our customers through continued investment in new products, technologies and services. While maintaining Caterpillar’s long-standing reputation for durability and performance, our new products launched in recent years have also been widely recognized by customers for their higher fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and improved equipment connectivity, playing a leading role in promoting sustainable development in the industry.
Today I would like to share with you a few prominent examples. Foreseeing the trend of electrification, Caterpillar launched products such as electric-drive bulldozers and diesel-electric hybrid wheel loaders a few years ago, and recently launched a large electric mining truck that has been proven to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We have also worked with our dealer PON to develop a battery-powered medium-sized excavator to provide zero-emission solutions for engineering customers.

In addition to the continuous introduction of new equipment product lines, cutting-edge new technologies that integrate renewable power sources are constantly emerging, such as the use of clean hydrogen energy as a fuel option for reciprocating engines and gas turbines, as well as batteries and battery management systems, photovoltaic products, etc. Caterpillar is also focused on providing new technology solutions. Many of our advanced power products have been put into use on customer construction sites, helping customers achieve climate-related goals and meet their needs for performance, durability and economic value. With more expectations for the future, we are currently developing a hydrogen fuel cell system project for powering data centers..

Innovative construction solutions to help customers achieve climate goals

These advanced products and technologies are helping to improve our construction efficiency, optimize energy use and reduce carbon emissions, but this is not enough. At the same time, we understand that more and more customers are beginning to need customized construction solutions to meet their different climate goals. Caterpillar’s various innovations can meet these needs. For example, our intelligent fleet management system can help customers analyze and achieve emission targets, reduce noise and dust, use fuel-saving technologies, and reduce standby time and fuel consumption.
Caterpillar’s remanufacturing and refurbishment services provide another sustainable solution. Compared with manufacturing new parts, each CAT remanufactured product can save an average of 86% of water resources, 85% of raw materials, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 61%. Based on 45 years of practical experience in the remanufacturing field, Caterpillar can currently provide more than 7,600 remanufactured parts products. Through these activities, we recycle tens of thousands of tons of materials from parts nearing the end of their service life every year, making a huge contribution to sustainable development.

Lean digital solutions improve operational excellence

In addition to continuously innovating in products and smart construction solutions to help customers complete infrastructure projects, Caterpillar also pays attention to its own operational excellence, making full use of lean digital solutions to improve the efficiency of the end-to-end value chain, reduce the use of raw materials and energy, and reduce waste. If I have the honor of inviting friends here to visit the Caterpillar excavator flagship factory in Xuzhou in the future, you will see the widespread application of intelligence and automation on the production line.
Caterpillar has announced seven new 2030 sustainability goals, five of which focus on climate and the environment. At the same time, we help customers achieve their climate-related goals by providing them with products that help fuel transition, improve operational efficiency and reduce emissions.
The realization of a low-carbon future requires the joint efforts of all companies in the infrastructure construction industry. Caterpillar will continue to work closely with customers and industry colleagues to identify existing and new challenges, understand your expectations and needs, and provide products and solutions to help you achieve longer-term success and build a better world together in a more sustainable way!
